BAGGAGE TRACING AND STORAGE
1. General Information
If your checked baggage was not delivered on the baggage carousel after your flight, was damaged, shows signs of having been opened, or you have received another passenger’s baggage by mistake, you should immediately contact a baggage tracing service officer or the Lost & Found desk in the baggage reclaim area.
To facilitate the baggage tracing process, passengers are advised to contact the baggage tracing service before leaving the baggage reclaim area.
Baggage tracing is carried out based on information about the passenger, flight, baggage tag, and the external characteristics of the baggage. Modern systems allow baggage movements to be tracked at key stages of transportation. In accordance with IATA international practice, baggage is tracked when it is accepted from the passenger, loaded onto the aircraft, transferred during connecting flights, and delivered to the passenger.
2. If Your Baggage Has Not Arrived
If you cannot find your baggage after baggage delivery has been completed:
- Do not leave the baggage reclaim area without contacting a baggage tracing service officer.
- Contact the Lost & Found service or an airline representative.
- Present your boarding pass and baggage tag.
- Provide the flight number, date, and route.
- Describe the appearance of the baggage, including its colour, size, type, brand, and distinguishing features.
- Provide your contact details.
- If necessary, complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) concerning the non-receipt of baggage.
- Keep the reference number of your registered report and the contact details of the baggage tracing service.
Information about the reported baggage is entered into the tracing system and used to determine its location and arrange its subsequent return to the passenger.
3. Information You Need to Provide
For effective baggage tracing, passengers are advised to have the following information available:
- passport or other identification document;
- boarding pass;
- baggage tag;
- flight number;
- date of travel;
- travel route;
- description of the baggage;
- information about its contents and distinguishing features;
- address or contact number for baggage delivery;
- valid telephone number and/or email address.
The more accurate the description of the baggage and the information provided, the easier it is to identify it among baggage being stored or transported.
4. Baggage Tracing
After the report has been registered, baggage tracing specialists:
- check the baggage tag information;
- determine the baggage routing;
- verify information regarding baggage loading and unloading;
- coordinate with the airline and the airports of departure, transfer, and destination;
- check for the baggage among unidentified or delayed baggage;
- conduct further international tracing when necessary;
- inform the passenger of the tracing results;
- arrange the handover or delivery of the recovered baggage in accordance with established procedures.
In accordance with international practice, most cases of delayed baggage are resolved within a short period after the passenger reports the issue. According to IATA, the majority of mishandled baggage is returned to passengers within 48 hours.
5. Recovered Baggage
Once the location of the baggage has been established, the passenger will be informed of its arrival.
Depending on the specific circumstances and the applicable airline rules, the baggage may:
- be handed over to the passenger at the airport;
- be handed over to an authorised person upon presentation of the required documents;
- be delivered to an address agreed upon with the passenger.
Upon receiving the baggage, passengers are advised to check:
- that the baggage tag matches their baggage information;
- the integrity of the baggage;
- the presence of all major parts of the baggage;
- whether there are any visible signs of damage.
6. Baggage Storage
Baggage that has not been collected by the passenger in a timely manner, recovered baggage, and baggage left at the airport are transferred for storage in accordance with the established procedures of the airport, airline, and handling organisation.
During storage, the following are ensured:
- baggage identification;
- registration of the date and time of receipt;
- recording of the baggage tag number;
- description of the external condition of the baggage;
- restricted access by unauthorised persons;
- compliance with aviation security requirements;
- safekeeping of the baggage until it is handed over to the passenger or transferred to an authorised organisation.
Storage periods and procedures for further handling of unclaimed baggage are determined by applicable legal requirements, airport regulations, and the conditions of carriage of the respective airline.
7. Damaged Baggage
If baggage is received with damage, passengers are advised to contact a baggage tracing service officer or an airline representative before leaving the baggage reclaim area.
The passenger should:
- present the baggage;
- provide the baggage tag;
- present the boarding pass;
- have the nature of the damage recorded;
- complete the relevant report/form in accordance with the established procedure.
Passengers should not independently dispose of the damaged baggage or its packaging until the relevant claim or report has been fully reviewed.
8. Receiving Another Passenger’s Baggage
If a passenger has mistakenly received another person’s baggage, they must immediately inform a baggage tracing service officer.
Passengers are advised not to open, use, or hand over the contents of another person’s baggage to third parties.
To prevent such incidents, passengers are advised to check the baggage tag number against the information on their baggage receipt before collecting their baggage.
9. Abandoned or Unclaimed Baggage
Baggage left by a passenger at the airport or not collected after arrival is registered and transferred for storage in accordance with established procedures.
If abandoned baggage is found, passengers should immediately inform an airport employee or aviation security officer. Passengers must not move, open, or inspect suspicious baggage themselves.
10. Important Information for Passengers
To reduce the risk of baggage loss or delay, passengers are advised to:
- keep the baggage tag until the baggage has been received;
- place their name, surname, and contact details on the baggage;
- where possible, keep additional identification information inside the baggage;
- do not place valuable or irreplaceable items in checked baggage;
- remove old baggage tags and stickers before checking in baggage;
- check that the baggage is correctly labelled at check-in;
- follow the airline’s instructions regarding baggage procedures when making connections.
IATA also recommends placing identification information both outside and inside the baggage and advises passengers not to place valuable or irreplaceable items in checked baggage.

Responsibility for the carriage, tracing, delivery, and handling of claims concerning checked baggage is determined by the applicable carrier’s rules, the conditions of the contract of carriage, and applicable legislation.
For international carriage, the passenger’s specific rights and the procedure for handling claims depend on the applicable rules and conditions of carriage. IATA recommends that passengers contact the relevant airline directly regarding delayed, damaged, or lost baggage.
